Seasonal allergies don’t just affect your nose—they are rooted in various aspects of your whole system.
Sinus pressure, shallow breathing, a tight chest, inflammation, itchy eyes, foggy thinking—these have to do with vasodilation, adrenal and pressure systems, hormones, neuro-chemicals, metabolic debris. Allergy symptoms can be supported by regulating the immune and nervous systems.
1. Vagus Nerve Reset
Did you know the Vagus Nerve is the main nerve of the entire parasympathetic nervous system? And that it controls aspects of digestion, heart rate, mood, mucous production, and immune function? The breath and movements in this technique are specifically designed to optimize the function of the vagus nerve naturally.
2. Allergies must be addressed from various angles, such as:
Cleansing-breath, foods, herbs, detox, circulation, exercise, reducing alcohol, limiting exposure to irritants
Calming-symptoms, nervous system, emotional stress, reactivity, histamines, tension in the head, neck and face
Strengthening– nervous, digestive, and immune systems, getting sufficient sleep
Regulating–hormones, adrenals, vasodilation, blood pressure, blood sugar (these are pressure systems that flood the head and face)
How to do it:
Round 1:
Repeat on the left side.
Round 2:
Repeat the same breaths and movements, but this time reach the arm gently overhead to the opposite side. If standing, tap the same side toe to the floor, leaning slightly to the opposite side. Feel the hip stretch, to open the entire side length of the body (vagus nerve goes along the side of the body).
Round 3:
Repeat the breath and movement pattern, but this time raise and bring down both arms together. Look up at the hands as you raise them, and back to looking straight ahead as they come down. (This movement targets the start of the vagus nerve, in the brain stem).
Don’t forget to take a breath at the end of each round (# 4 from round 1) after the hands come down.
After the breath work, continue to Step 2 with self acupressure in this relaxed state.
Location: At the outer edge of each nostril, in the crease where the nostril meets the face.
Action: Press firmly but gently on both sides. It might be a bit sore. Hold for about 2 full breaths. Move the fingers up to the top of the curve of the nostril, and hold for 2 breaths, and also to the lower part, pressing for 2 breaths.
This point opens nasal passages and encourages sinus drainage.
Location: Outer upper chest, in the corner where the collarbone meets the shoulder bone.
Action: Press or massage this triangular area of muscle and lymph tissue in circular motion with 3 fingers, one side at a time.
This point opens the lungs, eases chest tightness, stimulates lymphatic circulation, and releases emotional tension. In Chinese Medicine it can also be used to heal old or new grief.
Inhale deeply through the nose with eyes relaxed closed. Do not use force or take big breaths–long, slow, soft, like a thread.
Hold for 3 seconds.
Exhale slowly and completely through the mouth with a soft “haa” sound.
Repeat 2 more times.
Imagine that you are smiling in the forehead, chest, or belly (whichever one you feel like–they each affect different systems and will help regulate the pressure systems of the body).
This practice helps you reset your system in the moment, and regular practice is cumulative in restoring the nervous and immune systems.
Thank you for joining. We hope you feel enriched and empowered on this journey of planetary peace and health.
